Getting More Facebook Engagement With Fewer Viewers

Marketers are facing the challenge of finding a way to get more engagement from fewer views of their content on Facebook.  As you know, Facebook changed its algorithm, and since that change, pages have seen a lot less viewership.  Whether it’s a page designed to raise awareness of feline diabetes, or a page that focuses on married life, pages are seeing a significant decrease in viewers.

Getting Content to Show Up in a Fan's Facebook News Feed Is Getting More DifficultIf the content you are creating is not being seen by as many viewers, you have to make sure it’s more engaging.  You many only have one chance to get these people to pay attention to you, and you need to make sure it’s a good one.  What can you do?

Recently, I tried an experiment with the content on the Bagheera the Diabetic Cat site.  I had previously been using a WordPress plug in that automatically sent any content I created to Bagheera’s Facebook page.  Before Facebook’s algorithm change, that was working fine.  But ever since the change, I had seen a huge drop off in the number of people who saw links to blog posts.

I had been able to ignore the advice to not post links, because they typically perform worse than other more visual types of content.  Besides, I figured, the WordPress plug in puts a picture in there, so what’s the big deal?  Well, when Facebook changed its algorithm, something I had not had to worry about became a problem.Using Photos to Boost Viewership on Facebook is Key

I decided to change things up.  Now, what I do is save a picture from the blog post on my computer, and then I post it in Facebook.  The description of the photo contains the URL to which I want to direct traffic.

I’ve only done this for the past few days, but the results so far are encouraging.  Since I implemented this change, viewership for blog posts was 544, 464, and 497.  The three prior posts had viewership of 239, 327, and 381.  The total fan base is slightly over 2,000.  Obviously, this is a small sample size, but it appears that with Facebook valuing pictures more than links, a small switch in the way that content is shared results in a significant boost in the number of people who see it.

What are your thoughts on this?  I’d love to hear from you.
